THE MAKING OF THE SCORE:
A Note From the Composer:
Ray Bradbury's Chrysalis is my third score created for a world straight out of the mind of the legendary Ray Bradbury.
Each film has been a rewarding privilege but also a challenge to score. Fortunately, I have found at the center of these stories
a key theme of hope and optimism to guide me.
In Chrysalis, the main character of Smith is the catalyst between a two sided struggle.
It had to be represented by dark and quiet sounds of the not too far future. The main idea, or "Ritual" theme, developed
out of Smith's internal struggle to help humanity which finds itself in a tragic dystopia. Hartley's isolated pathos
finds itself in the score's dark, textural pointillism, a sort of lack of faith, or coming together, in the music to solve a problem.
The other scientists must come to terms with Smith's mysterious metamorphosis. The final "Rebirth" theme represents Smith's (and eventually
the Earth's) second chance. We hear a finale of optimism that was first predicted by Dr. Rockwell earlier in the story.
My friends Roger
Lay Jr. and Tony Baez Milan have created an exciting, modern science fiction film of Ray Bradbury's timeless tale of survival in the final hour.
